A six-year-old Nigerian girl has tragically lost her life after falling from the 28th floor of a residential apartment building in Toronto, Canada.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Chalkfarm Drive in the North York area of Toronto, close to Jane Street, at about 8:15 p.m. Emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of an unspecified disturbance, only to discover the child lying unresponsive outside the high-rise building.
Reports indicated that the girl’s mother was in Nigeria at the time of the tragedy, while the child was said to have been staying with a family friend who resides on the top floor of the apartment complex.
Residents of the building described the young girl as cheerful, playful, and familiar to many people in the neighbourhood. Several neighbours expressed shock and sadness over the incident, saying they regularly saw her around the premises and during school runs.
One resident told local media that the child was lively and often played around the building, adding that the entire community had been devastated by the news.
Another neighbour said it was difficult to believe the girl was gone, noting that she was seen almost every morning within the estate.
The tragic development has also raised concerns among residents over how the fall happened, especially because the apartment windows reportedly have safety locks and restrictions designed to prevent them from opening fully.
Some neighbours stated that the windows are bolted and equipped with protective mechanisms, making the circumstances surrounding the incident even more puzzling.
The property management company overseeing the building, Greenwin, described the incident as deeply painful and extended condolences to the girl’s family. The company confirmed that emergency officials responded quickly and stated that it is cooperating fully with investigators.
However, the management declined to comment on the maintenance history or condition of the building’s windows because investigations are still ongoing.
Toronto Police said there is currently no indication of foul play, although authorities have continued investigations while awaiting the outcome of an autopsy report.
