A Nigerian woman based in South Africa has expressed concern over what she described as the poor treatment of Nigerians living in the country, urging the Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in.
In a video message, she alleged that Nigerians are frequently subjected to harassment and attacks, while claiming that little or no intervention has come from Nigerian authorities. She also faulted the Nigerian consulate, accusing it of remaining silent despite repeated complaints.
She further stated that the situation appears to be escalating beyond issues of documentation, adding that some Nigerians are allegedly being told to leave South Africa entirely.
Sharing her personal experience, she said her children, who were born in South Africa, have faced bullying and are often told to “go back to their country.”
Although she acknowledged that some people might consider relocating back to Nigeria, she questioned the practicality of such a move, pointing to challenges such as economic hardship, unstable electricity supply, and difficult living conditions.
She called on the Nigerian government to engage South African authorities on the matter, stressing that any departure of Nigerians should be handled in a safe and dignified manner, rather than under hostile circumstances.
