A Nigerian primary school pupil has become an internet sensation after delivering a remarkable and entertaining speech during a school debate on the popular question of whether garri is better than rice.
The young girl, identified as Salami Aminat, a Primary 3 student of Living Spring School, was chosen to defend the argument that garri is a better meal option compared to rice.
Standing confidently before her audience, Aminat impressed everyone with her bold introduction and impressive speaking skills.
“I’m here to convince and not confuse you that garri is much better than rice,” she said as she began her presentation.
The young debater went on to support her argument with a mix of humour and practical examples, explaining that garri is easier to access, faster to prepare, and more convenient, especially in situations where cooking resources are limited.
She noted that unlike rice, which requires cooking, fuel, and more preparation time, garri can be enjoyed instantly with just water. She also praised its flexibility, listing different combinations such as groundnuts, sugar, milk, beans, soup, fish, suya, and coconut.
Aminat further described garri as a meal that cuts across all social levels, saying it is enjoyed by people from different backgrounds, including students, wealthy individuals, and those with limited resources.
To further prove her point, the pupil carried out a live demonstration by preparing garri during the debate and eating it immediately, pointing out that rice cannot be eaten without first being cooked.
She ended her presentation with a statement that left many impressed:
“Rice is for fancy, garri is for salvation. Rice is occasional, garri is dependable.”
Following the debate, Aminat received widespread admiration on social media, with many Nigerians praising her confidence, creativity, and exceptional public speaking ability at such a young age.
