Fashion designer Veekee James has publicly supported media personality Toke Makinwa following a viral incident involving her baby daughter at Iyabo Ojo’s grandson Rakeem’s first birthday celebration.
A video from the star-studded event recently made the rounds online, showing Toke in a heated exchange with some of the event ushers after one of them reportedly grabbed her baby’s hand to stamp it.
Toke, visibly protective of her child, immediately confronted the situation and questioned why the usher would touch her daughter without first seeking her permission.
The incident caught Veekee James’ attention, prompting the fashion designer to share her thoughts on Snapchat. Veekee criticised the practice of strangers touching babies at public gatherings, particularly because young children frequently put their hands in their mouths.
Speaking passionately about the situation, she said:
“I saw a video of Toke Makinwa’s baby, a complete stranger going to touch the baby’s hand. You are not their friend, you are not her family member, you are not related to them in any way. Why are you carrying your hand to touch a baby’s hand? You know babies put their hands in their mouth, why are you touching the baby’s hand? And then somebody goes, if you don’t want people to touch your baby, don’t bring them out.”
Veekee argued that parents have every right to set boundaries when it comes to physical contact with their children, especially when the person involved is a complete stranger.
She also questioned the mindset of people who casually reach out to touch babies without considering hygiene or whether the child’s parent is comfortable with it.
Addressing those who criticised Toke’s reaction, Veekee insisted that she would not tolerate a stranger touching her child without permission.
“So, some of you are actually walking around, touching people’s children without asking permission? It can not even be me. Some people with their dirty hands, keep your hands to yourself. Even if your hands are even clean, keep your hands to yourself,” she added.
Veekee’s comments have since added another dimension to the online conversation, with many social media users debating the importance of respecting parents’ boundaries and maintaining proper hygiene around babies at public events.
