The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s performance, insisting that the president has done well despite criticism from opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
Wike made the remarks during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, October 13, where he accused opposition politicians of allowing their ambitions to take over power to influence their assessment of Tinubu’s administration.
“For us, and whether anybody likes or not, we think Mr. President has done well,” Wike said.
“It’s just that opposition wants to take over power,” he added.
The minister argued that political differences should not prevent leaders from acknowledging achievements they believe could benefit the country. He also criticised politicians who support Tinubu at the national level but oppose similar political arrangements in their respective states.
Wike maintained that belonging to an opposition party does not justify claiming that the president has achieved nothing.
“You know, time has come, not because you’re an opposition party. And then you just say, the man who is in charge of affairs of the country has done nothing for the sake of, I mean, opposition, that’s not fair,” he said.
He further challenged opposition politicians to provide Nigerians with what he considers a more honest assessment of the administration rather than dismissing its performance because of political differences.
“Let those of us who are also in other political parties tell Nigeria, no, this is not the truth, this is what is happening,” Wike said.
The minister urged political actors to acknowledge any development they believe would benefit Nigeria, regardless of party affiliation.
