“Why Should The President Appoint INEC Chairman?”- Man Questions Electoral Commission’s Independence

A Nigerian man has questioned the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arguing that allowing the President to appoint the commission’s chairman undermines its ability to operate independently.

The man raised the concern while reacting to Nigeria’s political situation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his remarks, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current arrangement for appointing the head of the electoral body, insisting that lawmakers have a responsibility to review the process.

He said, “I don’t really understand what INEC is actually doing, but the fact remains that the greatest disservice our lawmakers are doing to this country is allowing the President to appoint the INEC chairman.”

His comments have sparked conversations about the independence of INEC and whether the process of appointing its chairman gives the commission enough room to operate without political influence.
