A Nigerian lady has sparked a conversation about traditional wedding practices after questioning the wording of the popular phrase, “You may now kiss the bride.”
The woman, who shared her opinion online, suggested that the expression could carry undertones that are uncomfortable from a feminist perspective.
“Call me a feminist extremist, but ‘You may now kiss the bride’ sounds problematic to me,” she said.
Her comment appears to question the way the phrase traditionally addresses the groom as the person permitted to kiss the bride, rather than presenting the kiss as a mutual decision between both partners.
The phrase has previously attracted criticism in discussions about wedding traditions and gender roles. Some commentators argue that its wording portrays the groom as the active participant and the bride as the recipient of the action.
