Trent Alexander-Arnold has been selected by England head coach Thomas Tuchel for the team’s next international fixtures after being overlooked for the World Cup.
Alexander-Arnold returns to the England squad alongside Cole Palmer, Rio Ngumoha and Alex Scott, while Manchester City forward Phil Foden has been left out.
Tuchel also called up Lewis Hall, Jarrad Branthwaite, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has been included as a midfielder.
Like Foden, Tuchel did not select Morgan Gibbs-White or Adam Wharton. Fulham’s Josh King has also been left out.
Alexander-Arnold won the most recent of his 34 England caps in June 2025. Reece James is also absent from the squad, with Tuchel saying the Chelsea defender is injured. The England coach added that he would have selected Ben White but for injury.
“It’s an opportunity for Trent,” the England head coach said. “He had a good start to the season. He started some matches for Real Madrid. We’re happy to have him back. It’s a chance for Trent to claim what he feels is his – his place on the right side. So here we go.”
Palmer missed out on the World Cup after struggling with form and fitness last season but has started this campaign brightly, scoring four goals and providing two assists.
Scott was called up last November for games against Serbia and Albania but did not play. He was also not selected for the World Cup, although he was one of four youngsters included as training players for England’s camp in Florida before the tournament.
Ngumoha was also among those training players, and his only England appearance came against New Zealand in a warm-up game. The 18-year-old has not started a league match for Liverpool since the opening day but has made five appearances. He started against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League and Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.
Speaking about Scott, Tuchel said, “Alex has been maybe one of the best performers in the Premier League since the start of the season. Individually, he’s one of the outstanding midfielders.”
Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze has retained his place despite an underwhelming start to the season with Arsenal, having started none of their Premier League fixtures.
Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who was an unused player at the World Cup, is also in the squad. Tino Livramento, who had to withdraw from the World Cup squad through injury, has also been selected.
Dean Henderson, Djed Spence, Dan Burn, John Stones and Jordan Henderson, who went to the World Cup, are injured.
Three other World Cup players – Noni Madueke, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney – have not been included, while there is also no place for Levi Colwill.
Calvert-Lewin’s four goals in six games for Leeds this season have earned him a return to the squad, while Tuchel said King was “very close” to a call-up.
“The decision was not to invite too many players,” he said. “There must be a real chance to get minutes in the No. 10 position.”
England open their Nations League Group A3 campaign at home to Spain next Saturday before facing Czechia either side of a game in Croatia.
