Celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has called out what she described as the double standards of Nigerians when it comes to fashion and creativity.
Her reaction came after Grace Makun highlighted the irony of Nigerians admiring and praising outfits designed by international fashion brands while often criticising Toyin for her unconventional style.
Responding to the post, Toyin agreed with Grace’s observation, noting that Nigerians sometimes ridicule their own while celebrating similar creativity when it comes from foreigners.
The fashion designer explained that with time, she has learnt not to conform to expectations or try to blend in. Instead, she has chosen to remain confident in her individuality and continue standing out.
Toyin also revealed that she constantly encourages and celebrates herself, stressing that she believes in her abilities and creative vision.
She maintained that she would continue to embrace her identity as a trendsetter, regardless of the criticism that may come her way.
