Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Nigeria Falconets, are on the brink of booking a place at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland as they prepare for the decisive second-leg qualifier against Malawi U-20 Women’s National Team in Lilongwe on Saturday.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that the team arrived in Malawi on Wednesday ahead of the crucial fixture. Nigeria go into the return leg with a strong advantage after securing a 2–0 victory in the first leg played in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the match, head coach Moses Aduku expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to finish the job and seal qualification.
“We are here to play and win. The players understand the importance of this match, and we are fully prepared tactically and physically for the challenge ahead,” he said.
Aduku added that the team had focused on improving attacking coordination, defensive organisation, and overall sharpness in front of goal, noting that while the side often grows stronger in the second half, emphasis had also been placed on stronger starts.
Nigeria’s path to the final qualifying round included convincing aggregate wins over Rwanda Women’s U-20 National Team (5–0) and Senegal Women’s U-20 National Team (3–1).
The return leg against Malawi will be held at the Bingu National Stadium, Lilongwe, with kickoff set for 3pm local time (2pm Nigeria time).
Across the continent, other fixtures remain finely poised: Ghana Women’s U-20 National Team face a tough away test against Uganda Women’s U-20 National Team in Kampala after a 2–1 first-leg win; Cameroon Women’s U-20 National Team hold a 3–1 advantage over Tanzania Women’s U-20 National Team ahead of their return leg in Dar es Salaam; while Benin Republic Women’s U-20 National Team will host Côte d’Ivoire Women’s U-20 National Team after a 1–1 draw in Abidjan.
The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Poland from September 5 to 26, with four African teams expected to emerge from the qualifiers to represent the continent at the tournament.
