Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack launched by suspected ISWAP terrorists on the Headquarters of the 27 Brigade in Buni Gari and a nearby military checkpoint in Yobe State.
According to military authorities, the terrorists attacked the area around 2am in a multi-directional assault aimed at overrunning the military formation.
However, the troops reportedly stood their ground and engaged the attackers with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, disclosed that several terrorists were neutralised during the gun battle, while many others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Uba explained that the insurgents advanced in waves from different directions but were met with strong resistance from troops who successfully halted their movement.
He added that traces of blood discovered along the withdrawal routes indicated that many of the fleeing terrorists sustained injuries during the encounter.
According to him, troops later recovered bodies of the terrorists as well as weapons abandoned in surrounding bushes and along escape routes.
He further revealed that intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support from the Air Component Command of Operation HADIN KAI helped in tracking the fleeing insurgents in real time.
The military spokesman said precision air strikes were also carried out against the escaping terrorists, worsening their losses.
Items recovered after the operation included AK-47 rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, ammunition, magazines, bandoliers and other military equipment.
Uba noted that troops, alongside hybrid forces and local vigilantes, have continued clearance operations in the area to prevent the terrorists from regrouping.
He stressed that the military base was never breached during the attack, adding that troops maintained full operational control throughout the confrontation.
The army also confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives during the exchange of fire, while injured personnel are currently receiving treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups and denying them freedom of movement across the North-East.
